LET’S MEET ARCHIE

Meet Archie, a 14-year-old sewing sensation with dreams as big as his heart. In a world filled with endless possibilities, Archie has found his calling in the art of fashion and costume design.

Discovering a Passion:  Archie has already embarked on a sewing journey that speaks volumes about his dedication and talent.  Already equipped with  sewing skills, Archie was eager to dive deeper into the world of fabric and thread.

The Mary Quant Inspired Dress:  Drawing inspiration from the iconic designer, he skillfully brought his vision to life, weaving together creativity and craftsmanship in every stitch. The dress not only showcased Archie’s technical skills but also his ability to infuse personality and fun into his creations.

Learning and Growing: Under my guidance, Archie honed his existing skills and acquired new ones, transforming into a young maestro of the sewing machine. The classroom became his playground, and each lesson was an opportunity for him to explore, innovate, and refine his techniques.

A Beautiful Gift: Archie’s decided to use his skills to create a beautiful dress for his friend which would be worn in the school musical ‘Hairspray’. The garment wasn’t just a piece of fabric stitched together; it was a manifestation of friendship and artistic expression. Archie’s ability to blend functionality with artistic flair is a testament to his maturity as a young designer.

Dreams of the Future: Archie’s aspirations in fashion and costume design extend far beyond the sewing machine and he has set his sights on designing costume and fashion with a particular interest in vintage fashion.

Conclusion: In the world of sewing, Archie stands out not just for his age but for the passion and dedication he brings to every project. Archie’s journey is an inspiration to aspiring designers of all ages, proving that talent knows no boundaries when guided by creativity and passion for colour and cloth!

VINTAGE 1960’S DESIGN DETAILS

Archie used a lot of vintage styling in his design.  He used a PDF pattern from the Victoria and Albert museum inspired by a Mary Quant original dress. The pattern was created by Alice & Co. He used a metal zip, back shoulder darts, Peter Pan collar and big covered buttons – all design detailing that are era appropriate. He used his Brother Innov-is 15 sewing machine to create a contrast decorative stitch along the pockets and Peter Pan collar. The floral fabric print and in pink and orange was oozing Mary Quant!

As this style was such a success for him to make and also allowed him to learn lots of new sewing skills he has decided to make it again.  This time he is using another floral fabric from ‘Red Raspberry Design’.

Fancy sewing this similar style for yourself – check out this link to both this dressmaking pattern and this gorgeous Rose and Hubble yellow floral cotton poplin that I recommend in the online shop.

Want to read more about how inspirational a woman Mary Quant was and how she influenced fashion – check out this book in the online store.  This book  accompanied the V&A exhibition of Mary Quant in 2019 which I was lucky to visit.
