Celebrating Progress: Rhia, India & Jayne Complete the Beginner Sewing Course
Today marked the final session of our 7-week Beginner Sewing Course, and what a journey it’s been! A few weeks ago, I introduced you to Rhia, India, and Jayne — three students at the start of their sewing adventure. Now, as they wrap up the course, it’s time to celebrate all they’ve achieved.
India arrived with some sewing experience already under her belt, but for Rhia and Jayne, this was their very first time behind a sewing machine. Watching them all grow in confidence and skill week by week has been a real joy.
One of the things I love most about my courses is that students get to choose their own individual projects. If they can dream it, they can sew it — and this trio has embraced that fully.
Rhia has begun designing her own style, taking inspiration from the garments already in her wardrobe. She’s approaching sewing not just as a skill but as a creative expression, and it’s been exciting to see her ideas come to life. She comes to class brimming with ideas and designs. She has cloned her favourite dress, altered her jeans, and completely redesigned her pink birthday dress.
Jayne, after her course time has been happily lost in her sewing room — stitching up bags, sunglasses cases, and more — clearly hooked on the joy of making. Jayne also crochets as does India so there has been lots of creativity in common in the class.
India has learned about the importance of layering seams, clipping out the bulk. She has discovered the beauty of ‘under-stitching’, making rouleau loops from hand-cut bias binding. In the Intermediate course, India will continue her formal dress design, focusing on the gathered skirt, invisible zip and finishing.
CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT
At the end of the course, we take a moment to formally recognise each student’s growth and commitment with a Certificate of Achievement.
Beautifully designed, it’s more than just a piece of paper — it’s a celebration of their hard work, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the skills they’ve gained. For many students, receiving that certificate is a powerful moment of pride and validation, a reminder that they can do this — and they have. For me, as their teacher, it’s a chance to honour their dedication and mark the beginning of what we hope will be a long and fulfilling sewing journey.
HAVE OUR TRIO INSPIRED YOU TO START SEWING?
All three have now booked into the Intermediate Sewing Workshop — the next step in their journey. I’m thrilled to see their dedication and creativity continuing to grow. It’s a real privilege as a teacher to be a part of these early stages, and to help guide and support such inspiring students.
Rhia, India, and Jayne — congratulations on everything you’ve achieved so far. I can’t wait to see where your sewing takes you next.
