Creative Sewing Courses & Workshops for Everyone

Colour, pattern and Choice!

Fabric shopping when on holiday? This is the very reason to bring an empty suitcase when planning an adventure away! Whether its a weekend break or a few weeks away it just adds to the excitement to pinpoint some fabric stores to visit.

Many of my students plan holidays to the destinations where the most luxurious fabrics can be found.  Both Jane and Chrissie rate Italy as fabulous places to visit to buy some lengths of cloth.  Who doesn’t leave some time to visit Liberty when booking a flight to London?!

Across Ireland, I had students travel across borders with a pre-made list of the best fabric (and yarn) stores to visit.

I invite you to travel with me to Spain in this blog and visit 1 of the largest fabric stores (I visited 2 of their many locations), and also seek out the treasures to be found in the smaller stores.

Before finishing up my courses for the Summer at the start of May, I had spent a little time toiling and cutting out over 12 garments to make when on the road.  Time constraints meant that I didn’t get to purchase all the bias, ribbons and buttons necessary to complete all the styles. So I had made my own little list.

ZARAGOZA

Zaragoza is a city in Aragon Province in Spain.  An online search brought me to Julian Lopez which is located in the city centre.  A beautiful store.  With a limited knowledge of Spanish, but with google Translate and Duolingo pre-installed on my phone I purchased a beautiful silk lining for a Chanel style jacket I am making.  ‘Dos metros de tela’ and it was paid for and in a bag!

The choice of fabrics in every colour imaginable was incredible, but also overwhelming.

They only stock fabrics in the Zaragoza store.  So I had to venture a little further along to get bias tape and sewing thread.

I found a small but well stocked store at Novedades Paris.  It is old style counter service which I loved and when I asked for bias binding I was brought a whole book of colours, widths and patterns.  A full range of Gutermann thread and the perfect buttons for a thrifted pink wool jacket I picked up in France.  So that was the bias ticked off my list allowing me to finish off some more sewing jobs.

ALICANTE

Onto Alicante and some city centre shopping! The next shopping stop was again Julian Lopez in Alicante. This one was bigger than Zaragoza and the sales assistant told me the Madrid store is four times this size! The fabrics were stunning and if I had all the money and the time in the world I would have bought lots! But I had already cut my fabric stash and it was in a queue to be made.  I was only here for the accessories.  So this store had trims, threads, ribbons, feathers.  I did get a few more things ticked off my list, but not everything.  I was overwhelmed by choice, sometimes you can have too much off a good thing!

The prices reflect the quality of the fabric stocked.  There is a massive sale rail with prices from 3.99 Euro per metre.  With regular flights from Belfast to Alicante it is well worth the visit – bring an empty suitcase!  Spending an afternoon watching the Spanish style on the streets is very inspiring for new sewing designs and projects.

One more thing off my list was a satin bias to add to a jacket – and I found this in a side street in a lovely little town called Biar, 45 minutes from Alicante centre. Essentially an alterations shop, I recognised its potential from the picture of a Singer sewing machine on the window.

I am still searching for my gold buttons, but I am a long way to finishing off my Linton tweed Chanel style jacket. The search continues…I may just find the perfect buttons back in Ireland!

What have I been sewing on the road? I will reveal all in the next blog.

I recently completed a 7 week course with Christine to develop sewing techniques for costume. Christine is a wonderful teacher with a wealth of knowledge and experience. It was a lovely small class so everyone had the opportunity to ask lots of questions and develop their own projects. Christine went above and beyond to make this a really enjoyable experience, the tea and biscuits were a hit with our group! Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to increase their skill set in a relaxed, supportive environment. Thank you!

As a complete beginner in using a sewing machine and dressmaking, I learned so much in the 7 weeks I spent with Christine. Christine makes your understanding of the technical side of it all, somewhat simplistic. Christine was always on hand to help you develop your skills and was very thorough in guiding you through each step. I enjoyed the course that much, I have now enrolled in another 7 weeks course with Christine. thank you for sharing your life skills with me

Fabulous afternoon with Christine. I spent three hours in a private lesson today to get help with a mother of the bride dress I am making. I got so much good advice and help for example working with such a difficult silky fabric. Advice on machines, irons, threads, fusing and so much more. Invaluable advice and in such a relaxed style. Loved it. Booked another session. Great for the soul. Thank you Christine for being an amazing teacher.

Just had a one to one class with Christine. It was brilliant! As a complete sewing machine novice I now feel confident enough to do everything from a multitude of different stitch styles on different fabrics to sewing button holes and zips! She taught me all the basics including how to wind on a bobbin, thread up and strip down the machine and tackle most rogue issues!! Brian was brilliant too and had serviced my lovely singer machine that had been sitting in a box for 10 years… since it was bought! I would thoroughly recommend them both! Thankyou

I just finished the 7 week beginner's course after a 10 year hiatus from sewing. I absolutely loved it, the classes are intensive but every week from when I entered until when I left Christine's studio it was like entering a time warp! 3 hours felt like 20 minutes as I learnt so many practical sewing skills. Christine is such an inspirational person with her creative projects and she absolutely reignited my love for sewing with her excellent teaching skills, creativity, patience and encouragement. Thank you Christine!

I have attended the Intermediate sewing course with Christine and have learnt so much. I am a self taught sewer and had a lot of bad habits. Christine is such a brilliant teacher she brings the best out of each of us. She is patient and encourages each of us to stretch ourselves but more than that guiding us along the way with her wealth of experience. I thoroughly recommend completing a sewing course with Christine that’s why I’ve signed up for another one!

Having found Colour & Cloth online, Christine directed me to Brian who kindly overhauled and serviced my lovely treasure of a find: (a beautiful hand crank sewing machine "Sylvia" made by Harrods) and traced the model number back to 1876. The quick turnaround on servicing and knowledge of machines is impressive in itself and Brian's joy on seeing such a machine was obvious.By way of a one to one lesson, Christine took me through the absolute basics of sewing from how to thread "Sylvia" to stitching in various forms. She has also guided me in the best threads and fabrics to use to get the best from this older machine.Christine's knowledge and genuine passion of fabrics and sewing is infectious and her patience with me as the beginner has set me up to find joy in using this lovely instrument.Thank you Brian and Christine.
