Sewing Tuition – A Proven Path to Excellence

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many talented young people through their GCSE and A-Level Art and Design, with a strong focus on textiles and sewing. I studied Art and Design and Home Economics, Textiles at Portadown College. Going on to study Fashion at University of Ulster, Belfast.

Private tuition offers students the chance to step away from busy classrooms and immerse themselves in a relaxed, creative environment. Here, they can fully focus on their subject, express themselves freely, and explore ideas without distraction.

My students consistently achieve outstanding results — many have received 100% in their final submissions. In fact, in 2017, I was invited to help shape the GCSE Art and Design curriculum, and it’s this experience, along with my passion for creativity, that informs my teaching.

Just this week, I received a message from the mother of one of my GCSE students:

“Martha was awarded 100% from both her teachers for her Art GCSE.”
With the right support and encouragement, students are empowered to explore, take creative risks, and discover their unique voice.

I began teaching over 13 years ago, first at Belfast Metropolitan College on the Leisure Dressmaking course, then delivering Level 2 City & Guilds in Costume Design. Since 2014, I’ve been teaching independently under my own brand, Colour and Cloth.

My tuition blends creative freedom with industry-standard techniques in sewing, presentation, and portfolio development. Whether you’re aiming to improve your grades, prepare for university, or simply deepen your creative skills, each session is tailored to your individual goals.

Let my past students inspire your future!

FROM COLLEGE TO  COUTURE

Now a couture wedding dress designer based in London, DAMIAN CAMPBELL sewed his first dress for his A-level under my guidance. Having never sewn before, Damian arrived with his designs wanting to make a bias cut 1930’s style silk evening dress. His attention to detail, dedication to his tuition led him to achieve  the highest mark in all of Northern Ireland for their A-Level Art and Design. His work was selected for public exhibition at the Ulster Museum, an honour for students that speaks volumes about the quality and originality of their portfolio. Damian’s couture bridal portfolio can be viewed on damiancampbell.co.uk

TIMOTHY GIBBONS used the sewing and construction techniques I taught him to build an outstanding portfolio leading to an unconditional offer to study at the world-renowned Central Saint Martins in London. In the ten years since, he has developed his own fashion label and has been featured in Vogue and The New York Times. He has dressed pop stars, film stars and worked with top designers both in fashion and film.  Timmy is very proud of being from East Belfast – read more here.

“I was always doing art in school and after school classes. I then went to tech to learn how to sew whenever I was 15 and then got into university in London.”

INVEST IN YOUR FASHION FUTURE

Many of my students say they ‘want to work in fashion, have their own label and sew their own clothes’. Now imagine having that as your career – and getting paid to do your passion. It IS possible.

If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.
