WHY I LOVE CAPES
In my personal collection, capes are more than just garments; I have two sewn from scratch, two upcycles, and two thrift shop treasures.
I want to share the magic behind my latest creations, hoping to inspire you to dive into the world of sewing and make your very own statement cape!
Using McCalls M7477 pattern, opting for the effortlessly chic Style C, I fashioned a mesmerizing green and black silk tweed lining it with green silk twill.
But here’s the secret—it’s not just for seasoned seamstresses! This pattern is a dream for Progressive Beginners, with its simplicity in both design and instructions. Your journey into the world of capes can begin right here!
Now, imagine the same spellbinding cape, reborn in a pink and cream Donegal tweed. I took it up a notch, choosing the E design for extra length and infusing it with personality. Inseam pockets? Check. Detachable fur collar? Double-check. Oh, and a detachable hood for that extra touch of flair. Every seam meticulously taped and overlocked, ensuring the fabric dances gracefully in your hands. I even embraced the fringed selvedge edge at the centre back seam, turning a simple detail into a visual feast.
Here’s the plot twist: I stumbled upon a luxury faux fur cream hood in a charity shop, a mere 50 pence turning into the crown jewel of my creation—a detachable fur collar. The lining, a sumptuous cream haboti silk, adds the finishing touch to this show-stopping ensemble.
After progressing from Beginner level where she made a gorgeous reversible kimono style jacket, Marina is now on her second Intermediate term. Last term she made trousers and a blouse. This term Marina has been making this stylish cape using Donegal tweed fabric and a jacquard viscose acetate lining. Check her progress so far in the gallery. She has chosen style A and using VOGUE V8959 sewing pattern.
