Sew A Handmade Christmas
SEWING A CHRISTMAS STOCKING
There is something magical about making your own Christmas gifts.
In our world of digital downloads, AI information and the constant fast paced expectations of this time of year, there is something truly beautiful about stepping away from it all and just creating.
This season we launched our Stocking Workshops. Designing, planning and sewing a Handmade Christmas stocking from start to finish makes it so much more personalised and fun to gift to those you love.
Rhia brought in some fabric, wadding and a wooly hat with 2 pom poms. She made her first stocking for herself, and after her day planned to use these skills to make stockings for all her family.
Adding personalised touches by applique, secret inside pockets and hanging loops, Rhia took the time to consider every aspect of her stocking.
She stitched on both her modern sewing machine and also our in-studio antique Jones hand cranked. The decals on this beautiful machine matched the festive colours of Rhia’s fabric.
Rhia repurposed one of the pom poms from her hat onto the stocking. Wadding was added for extra padding and ‘body’ to the stocking.
The lining was ‘bagged out’ – a technique Rhia had learnt in her previous sewing courses throughout the year with me.
A hanging loop was added so it could be hung across the fireplace. Rhia sent me photos of it in situ the moment she got home. She was very proud and happy with her beautiful stocking.
WHY HAND MADE IS LUXURY
Hand made is luxury because of its uniqueness. Sewn into every stitch is the makers identity and love for the craft. It is not mass produced and therefore can not be replicated exactly.
They take a lot more time to make and time is precious. Sewing by hand, and sewing using a hand cranked machine are both thoughtful processes. Slow sewing allows us time to remember the importance of making. The importance of being individual and valuing precious time.
"As a beginner to sewing I wanted to make something personal and fun for Christmas. Christine's beginner 6 week course made my creative vision come true, I truly enjoyed my sewing experience. My Christmas stockings look fantastic "
- RHIA, BEGINNER STUDENT
MAKING A MINATURE STOCKING GARLAND
Using a smaller stocking template, I am now sewing up a Christmas stocking garland for the 12 Days of Christmas. I have been re-purposing seat covers, sheepskin rugs and linen table cloths for this project. I will share this on a blog on Christmas Day. The hand beading takes time, but it is a pleasure to slow down and just stitch.
SEWING FOR THE SEASONS
Whether it is seasonal sewing for the home, festivities or for your wardrobe – whatever you wish to create, you can make it happen by learning to sew.
Sewing is not only a fantastic hobby, it can also be a gateway into making new friends and connections. Skills learned at my courses can create opportunities to employment – whether it be side hustles or small businesses. Learning how to do clothing alterations can also offer new business paths.
At Colour and Cloth, I teach all levels of Sewing Courses and Workshops so no matter what level you are at, there is no better time to start than now.
