LET’S MEET LESLEY
As a sewing tutor, I love to see the projects that my students plan to create.
Lesley has been taking the Intermediate Sewing Course with me for the past two seasons and it is in this class she has made her stunning costume for the Whitehead Victorian Christmas on December 2nd this year.
This project was a big undertaking and required lots of toiling and fitting. Lesley also did a lot of work at home.
The original pattern was taken from the book ‘Making Victorian Costumes for Women’. However the pattern we found had some discrepancies. Together Lesley and I worked on figuring out how it should be made by creating a miniature jacket. I do this often to work through garment engineering issues.
I encourage all of my students to try new things and push the boundaries of what’s possible in sewing and Lesley certainly did this in her course time.
FABRICS and SHAPES
Lesley chose a palette of blues for her costume. Combining a blue / navy checked wool for the jacket. The jacket was trimmed with navy velvet on the cuffs and collar.
Lesley also handknit her shawl – its stunning! Her hat was fashioned from a yoghurt pot; costume making allows you to be very inventive and resourceful! Her shoes were found in a thrift store and are the perfect shape for the Victorian era.
I encourage all my students to sew creativity, adding design details and not always follow the rules! Each student makes their own chosen pattern, some students copy their favourite clothes, which is what Lesley is working on next!
If you would like to see Lesley’s Victorian costume in all its beauty, she will be performing on December 2nd 2023 at the Whitehead Victorian Christmas light switch on.
