About Your Course

Have you have always wanted to make your own clothes, but not sure where to start?

This Beginner Dressmaking and Sewing Course will take you through each stage you need to make your first garment: from threading the machine, cutting the cloth to wearing your fabulous new design! Each student will work on their own design suitable for Beginner level. By the end of the course you will have made your first garment* and have gained a set of new sewing skills and sewing confidence ready to progress onto the next course level. *Based on full attendance of 7 weeks

Our courses are more than just lessons; they’re a blend of camaraderie, enjoyment, and focused learning.

Students are celebrated with a Certificate of Achievement on completion of the course.

What You Will Learn

The Beginner Dressmaking class has been designed to give each student a foundation of essential sewing skills and techniques that can be used across many genres from Dressmaking, Mending, Quilting, Home Interiors and much more.

The first 3 weeks of the course focus on:

  • Becoming comfortable and confident in machine and bobbin threading
  • Basic machine maintenance and various settings
  • What different machine feet are used for
  • Which needle to use, why and when
  • Essential straight and curved seams and seam finishes
  • Various straight and curved hem finishes
  • Hand tacking, pinning and how to ‘handle’ fabric under the machine
  • How to make a button hole and sew on a button
  • Insert an invisible zip

Week 3

We discuss paper patterns, take measurements and decide what each student would like to sew for themselves (or a friend). Each student will make a garment suitable for Beginner level – this will be discussed during class.

Weeks 4 – 7

Each student will learn how to cut out a paper pattern, cut out cloth and make a calico toile for fitting. Students are guided through each process with an emphasis on understanding each step of how a garment comes together.  Everyone learns in different ways; Christine understands, supports and adapts to this.

Once the toile is fitted, and any alterations made then its on to cutting out the ‘real cloth’ and completing a garment.  The focus is on completing the garment and achieving a ‘fabulous fit and feel-good factor’.

After each week, we come together and check in to see how every student is progressing and look forward to the week ahead.

What To Bring

You will need 1 metre of calico cotton fabric on your first class.  Click here to purchase.  During class time you will have access to various sewing equipment.  However you may also prefer to purchase your own ‘Essential Sewing Kit’. I have put together a full list of sewing essentials that I use and recommend because of their quality.

If you have your own sewing machine please bring it with you as this will aid your progress.  If you don’t have your own machine there are various machines in the studio which you can use. Your machine must be in full working order.  If you need your machine serviced then we can do this for you, click here to book.

We also have an overlocker and a cover stitch machine which you will experience during your course duration.
