Class Size: Maximum 6 students allowing lots of tutor attention.

Have you have always wanted to make your own clothes, but not sure where to start? This Beginner Sewing Course will take you through each stage you need to make your first garment: from threading the machine, cutting the cloth to wearing your fabulous new design! Each student will work on their own design suitable for Beginner level.

By the end of the course you will have made your first garment* and have gained a set of new sewing skills and sewing confidence ready to progress onto the next course level.  Based on full attendance of 7 weeks*

Courses are friendly, fun and focused.

Students are celebrated with a Certificate of Achievement on completion of the course.

  • Threading a sewing machine and winding a bobbin.
  • Understanding different fabrics and the importance of the selvedge, warp, weft and bias.
  • Creating various seams and hems and where and why to use them when making clothes.
  • Inserting a zip. Sewing on a button and making a buttonhole.
  • The importance of pressing with the iron for professional results.
  • Choosing a suitable pattern and fabric for Beginner level.
  • Adding design elements to make your own garment personal and unique!
  • How to understand a cut a dressmaking paper pattern and alter if required.
  • Marking up and cutting your fabric.
  • How to sew up your design using various machines including the overlocker.
  • Fitting your garment during the process to ensure a fabulous fit!
  • Sewing machines and sewing equipment can be provided. We have a mixture of modern and vintage sewing machines, an overlocker (serger) and a coverstitch machine.

However, you are encouraged to bring your own sewing machine so you will be more familiar with it. It must be in working order before your course commences. If it requires servicing or repair beforehand, we can do that for you, CLICK HERE to book in.
