Alterations & Repair Your Clothes is a 6-week course for anyone who wants real, practical skills with a needle and thread. Whether you're a second-hand shopping addict, someone who just wants to stop paying for simple fixes, or altering a wardrobe to suit a your changing body shape: this course has you covered.

Alteration skills aren't just useful for your own wardrobe — they're in high demand. With platforms like Vinted and the continued rise of charity shopping, second-hand fashion is booming, and there's real opportunity to pick up quality garments for pennies, then alter and restyle them into something unique and sellable. These are practical, transferable skills that can open doors to paid alteration work or even the start of your own small business.

  • How to take in, let out, shorten and adjust garments for a better fit
  • Mending techniques for tears, holes and worn seams, including visible mending
  • Replacing zips, buttons and fastenings
  • Hemming skills for trousers, skirts and dresses
  • Simple restyling techniques to update, customise or transform a second-hand find
  • How to choose the right thread, needle and stitch for different fabrics
  • Problem-solving and creative thinking when approaching a repair or alteration
  • The "engineering" of garments — understanding construction so you can work with it, not against it
  • Lifelong skills you can keep building on and adapt to any garment
  • Potential pathways into alteration, repair or sewing-related work
  • Your own sewing machine, foot pedal and manual
  • Your machine must be in full working order — if you'd like us to service it beforehand, we can arrange this in advance
  • Fabric scraps from materials you plan to use on your machine
  • Your sewing kit, if you have one
  • A notepad and pen
  • A full workshop companion list is included in your booking confirmation email — please check this closer to the day
  • At least 2–3 garments you'd like to alter or restyle (thrifted or from your own wardrobe work well)
  • Notebook and pen
