Creative Sewing Courses & Workshops for Everyone
Portadown, Northern Ireland

As the seasons shift and we dive into a new year it’s the perfect time to pause and ask yourself: what will you sew this season?

Do you have a wedding coming up—your own or someone else’s? Maybe you’re looking forward to a milestone birthday or a  graduation? Need a wedding veil? Drag queen outfit? Or a capsule wardrobe and a showstopping piece for a once-in-a-lifetime cruise?  Perhaps a show stopping outfit for FROCKTAILS 2025!

Here are some of the special occasion garments that my students designed and created for themselves in 2024:

Stephanie, my ‘Advanced Sewing student’ had entered a competition to win ‘3 hours of sewing with Patrick Grant’ and she won! I was over the moon for her, and immediately she started planning not only what she was going to make for ‘the upcycled challenge’ but also what she was going to make to wear on the big day! Stephanie chose a gorgeous cape pattern and a multicoloured wool fabric.  Her choice of lining, popper and buttons were perfect.  Working back from the deadline date, Stephanie planned her sewing schedule and ensured she made time to toile.  This allowed her to adjust the fit and shorten the length to a modern style. Stephanie told me she was so proud of what she had made to wear to London and meet and sew with Patrick! He was very impressed by her design and sewing skills and her outfit styling.

Stephanie is my second sewing student to meet Patrick Grant.  Angeline Murphy GBSB Series 4 learnt to sew with me many years ago.

Sewing with Purpose

Sewing for a specific event brings a magical sense of purpose to your creative process. You’re not just making something beautiful; you’re crafting memories, pouring your anticipation and energy into every stitch.

Start by asking yourself:

  • What do I need for this special occasion?
  • How do I want to feel on that day—confident, glamorous, relaxed?
  • What colours, patterns, and fabrics will transport me to that moment?

PLANNING THE PROCESS

Creating a Countdown Sewing Calendar

When sewing for a big event, timing is everything. The last thing you want is to be sewing in a panic the night before! (We have all been there!) Enter the Countdown Sewing Calendar—your personalized roadmap to success.

Here’s how to plan it:

  1. Set the date: When is the big event? Work backward from there.
  2. Break it down: Allocate time for designing, fabric shopping, sewing, and (very important!) fitting.
  3. Add buffers: Build in extra time for unforeseen hiccups, like tricky fabrics or unplanned changes. I gauge my time by ‘if I think it will take 3 hours, it will turn out to be 9’

Visualize the journey with a calendar you can hang up in your sewing space—crossing off each step is deeply satisfying!

Angela loved her hot pink organza wrap top so much she decided to recreate it with lots of additional design details to suit her big event. The gallery photographs show the process of designing a new pattern, cutting the cloth, looking at the original garment to understand how it was constructed.  Choosing the correct fabric, thread, needles and stitch to recreate the look.

  • Jacks vision to design and create his own drag costumes started by extracting all his ideas in his head; putting them onto paper and then cutting them into cloth.  Watch this space to see how he uses his new sewing and design skills!
  • Paul created a Chasuble for his friend going into the priesthood – he had a strict deadline to meet for the ceremony!
  • Sharon worked late on her wedding veil hand embroidering flowers to match her bouquet.  Her process started with a mood board after we created the mood with words and a brain storm.

Mood Boards: Fuel Your Creativity

Need a creative boost? Mood boards are an amazing way to dream big and bring your ideas to life.

  • For a wedding, gather fabric swatches, photos of dresses, lace details, and even little accents like buttons or trims.
  • Planning a holiday wardrobe? Pin images of your destination—beaches, bustling markets, cobblestone streets—and match them to flowy fabrics, bold prints, and versatile pieces. I created a Spanish themed mood board when I was planning my trip to Seville. The jumpsuit I wore in Seville, was inspired by the Moorish tiles that are seen across the city. I love to immerse myself with the mood, putting on my Spanish guitar playlist on Spotify.  I call it ‘method designing and sewing’
  • Celebrating a big birthday? Play with mood boards that express your style, whether it’s sleek and modern, whimsical and romantic, or a touch of vintage flair.

Sourcing the Perfect Fabric

One of the most thrilling parts of sewing is the hunt for the perfect fabric. Head to your favourite fabric store, wander through aisles of colours and textures, and let your imagination run wild. Don’t forget to explore online options too—many sites offer swatches so you can test the look and feel before committing. Take a look through our online fabric store.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Comfort and function: What fabric will work for the climate or activity?
  • Colours and patterns: Do they align with the mood and theme of your event?
  • Quality: A big occasion calls for materials that will last and feel luxurious.

FEEL THE EXCITEMENT – LET’S START SEWING!

Sewing for a special occasion isn’t just about the finished piece—it’s about the journey. The anticipation. The little nerves and big dreams. It’s about imagining how you’ll look and feel in something you created with your own hands. Its the pleasure to know that your garment is 100% unique and bespoke to YOU! Let’s get inspired, creative, and excited about sewing for those meaningful moments in life!

So, what’s on your sewing agenda this season? Remember, the best part of sewing isn’t just the end product—it’s the story you sew into every stitch.

I spotted this sequined ‘Coast’ jacket on ‘Vinted’ (my first purchase!) I was disappointed by the quality.  The polyester lining had to go! The sequined jacket will get more structure, interfacing and a new Liberty silk lining. This is my Restyle for a special occasion – I will aim for my birthday in April!
