Singer 221K – Worn Wiring and Motor Brushes

Lately, I’ve been receiving quite a few sewing machines with serious electrical problems. Some of them are vintage classics, like an older Singer that started smoking from the motor area. Let’s start with the Singer 221K circa 1940s.

On the surface it looked like a lovely vintage machine, but once I opened it up, things got worrying.

The old wiring had pulled away from its connectors, the insulation was badly worn, and fragments of material had built up – all ready to ignite the moment the power was switched on. To make matters worse, the motor brushes were very worn.

When I dismantled the motor area, I found everything coated in fine black dust from the deteriorated wiring. To bring it back to safe working order, I stripped the motor right down.

  • Removed all the old wires
  • Cleaned away grease, dirt, and dried oil.
  • I inspected each part carefully for further damage.
  • Cut new wire lengths, crimped and soldered fresh connections.

Once reassembled, the motor ran smoothly again – but more importantly, safely. This Singer could easily have gone up in smoke if left as it was.

I used only specific SINGER machine grease for the main shaft and gears for lubrication, SINGER oil for parts that need lubrication – DO NOT APPLY oil including WD40 to any parts of the motor! no matter what your husband says.

Viking-Husqvarna 150 – Back from the Dead

The next machine was a Viking-Husqvarna 150, brought in completely dead. The owner told me she had tried to use it when it suddenly went bang! with smoke and a strong burning smell.

Two different repair shops had already told her it couldn’t be fixed and suggested buying a new sewing machine. She wasn’t convinced, so she searched online, found Colour and Cloth, and gave us a call. I told her to bring it in – we’d at least give it a proper inspection.

Opening the bottom cover revealed a burnt panel and a main voltage capacitor that had severely blown. But that wasn’t the only issue. Tracing the electrics right back to the plug, I discovered:

  • The plug had a 13AMP fuse instead of the correct 3AMP.
  • The brown LIVE wire was hanging on by a single copper strand – a serious fire hazard.
  • Older RIFA capacitors are known to fail with age, so it wasn’t surprising to see one burnt out here.

To repair it properly, I:

  • Recut and reconnected the LIVE wire securely.
  • Replaced the incorrect fuse with a 3AMP.
  • Removed the burnt capacitor and ordered a modern replacement.
  • Cleaned and serviced the rest of the machine while waiting for the part.

Once the new capacitor arrived, I soldered it in, tested the electrics, and everything powered up correctly. But then another problem appeared: the motor ran, but the needle arm didn’t move. Removing the remaining covers revealed the simple cause – the main motor belt had slipped off. Once refitted, the Husqvarna came fully back to life. After thorough test stitching, it performed perfectly, safe and strong once more.

The owner was thrilled, especially since she had nearly given up and bought a new machine.

"I was lucky that I wasn't electrocuted or the house burnt down."

The Takeaway

Both these cases show how dangerous neglected electrics can be in sewing machines. Old wires, wrong fuses, loose connections, and ageing capacitors can all lead to smoking motors, loud bangs, or worse.

If you own a vintage or even a relatively modern machine that hasn’t been serviced in years, it’s worth having the electrics checked. A little preventative work can save your machine – and keep you safe.

Don’t overlook the cost of getting a quality professional service for your sewing machine.
